Medical Retina Research
The trust's medical retina experts are Mr Jong Ong and Mr Doug Newman.
The main area of research in the medical retina group has been into neovascular macular degeneration.
This service, which cooperates closely with those involved with medical ophthalmology and inherited diseases, provides comprehensive management of all medical retinal conditions concentrating especially on diabetes, macular degeneration and retinal vascular disorders. There is a dedicated retinal imaging service with fundus photography, fluourescein angiography, ICG angiography, OCT imaging and ultrasonography.
Treatments include retinal laser photocoagulation, including PASCAL laser treatment, photodynamic therapy, and intravitreal therapy.
Addenbrooke's was a site for the national PDT cohort study which investigated verteporfin photodynamic therapy. We are currently a site for the IVAN study which is assessing ranibizumab vs bevacizumab and different anti-VEGF treatment regimens.
Mr Ong & Mr Newman are hoping to be involved in future clinical research studies assessing therapeutic agents in the treatment of diabetic macular oedema and retinal vein occlusions.
